  • 2006 Clos Mogador Priorat

Funny how people's palates differ. This is a 95 from Parker and most of the tasters below. But not our style at all. I discovered Clos M years ago in Barcelona, but stopped buying it when the alcohol topped 15% and the price rose too much. The colour already worried me - almost bright purple. The nose reminded me of over the top California zinfandel - ton of vanilla oak and over-ripe fruit. Then you got the finish which was hot and spirity and well beyond the 14.5% on the label. I don't think this was an off bottle and wont open another one to test, I think this is just an unbalanced wine that is ageing badly. If you like you wines in the Parker style of super ripe, big blockbusters, and you drink it with curry, fine, but if you want a more nuanced, elegant vin de terroir I don't think this is for you...

  • 2009 Cantina Menegola Valtellina Superiore - Sassella Sassella Riserva

lovely bright red, a little deeper than the 2009 Rupestre (from 60 year old vines). Here we have a similar red fruit, floral nose, a little deeper, more curranty ripe fruit, a deft touch of oak, almost no Nebbiolo tannins - this is like Nebbiolo meets Chambolle-Musigny in Burgundy but at half the price. they are not big wines, but beautifully made.

  • 1994 Château Latour Grand Vin

One last bottle found in bottom of the cellar which I must admit I thought we'd already drunk. Decanted gently for half an hour or so. Colour is still a goodish medium deep red. Nose is soft mulberry type ripe fruit and that distinct 'walnut' Latour flavor. It's completely softened out, tannins gone, getting earthy-cedary towards the finish. All in all classic classy Bordeaux, though the finish is now fading and I suspect it's starting a slow decline. What is great is the 12.5% alcohol - an elegant, refined and lovely top Bordeaux from a so-so vintage and aged 25, just reminds one of what Bordeaux used to be...
