  • 2004 Château Petit Bocq

Picked this up in foire aux vin in Paris. Dark ruby red. Nice berry on the nose with a hint of coffee. Medium to full body with fine but structured tannin nicely balanced by round sweet fruit. medium finish. 15 euro. Apart from Sociando mallet, probably the best non-classified left bank wine I have tasted. Certainly better value for money compared to Chateau Gloria.

Open this an hour before dinner. initially, earthy nose with hint of truffle but a little underwhelming. the wine opened up after hour and a half and continued to improve over the course of the dinner (wine still evolving after three hours when we had our last pour). Concentrated with tinge of brown at the rim. Great nose. Pencil shavings, dark fruit, hint of cloves and tobacco. Lots of good wine smells better than it tastes but not this one. In the mouth, it was sublime. It rolled in the mouth in a perfect harmony of fruit and tannin. There is nothing angular about this. Tannin was round and gave great structure. Soft acidity but spicy enough to freshen up the wine. AND the finish... how should I discribe this... this is the closest that you will come to tasting a cigar if without having one. It lingered in my throat with that pleasant tinge of bitterness for more than 20 seconds. The whole tasting experience was a crescendo that climaxed at the finish. To me this is what sets a great wine apart the merely good ones.
I have cooked up a good steak for my wife but the wine was the star of the show.

Saw it at Carrefour at 15 Euro! Bought 6 bottles and I couldn't resist opening one. dark red to the brim. Nose is closed. Could still make out dark fruit and a tinge of smoke and shave wood. Full in the mouth with chewable fruit and expectedly, still rather tannic. Nevertheless, the tannic is well structured and clearly will evolve well with cellaring. 10 second + finish. I kept half a bottle for to be consummed the next day. The same tasting note is largely the same as yesterday except that the nose is slightly more evolved but wine still taste young. I'm clearly not doing it justice to drink it now. at least 5 more years in cellar I think.
