  • 2005 Bodegas LAN Rioja Edición Limitada

750 ml, brought to room temperature from the cellar, decanted 2 hours, and drank over 4 hours.
Dark red color, medium density, no bricking.
Great nose with aromas of dark fruit, fig, earth and mild barnyard.
This wine hits your palate with concentrated dark fruits of plum, blackberries, black currant and a hint of raisin. There is a bright acidity and a peppery bite that give way to a vast array of secondary flavors, starting with dates, slight mocha, and evolving into forest floor and mild tobacco.
The evolution of flavors persist in a long, long finish of 90 seconds or more. This is an extremely seductive wine, drawing you back for more of an amazing sensory bouquet. There was a hint of tartness in the mid palate at the beginning that faded after a few hours. There is plenty of acidity, creating brightness on the initial flavors and harnessing the evolution to the finish. Tannins are very fine grained initially and became more silky over the course of the experience.
This wine is in a great drinking window now. The acidity and tannins give this wine great backbone and I expect it will be remain in a great drinking window for the next 5 years or more.

  • 2014 Quintessa Sauvignon Blanc Illumination

750 ml, decanted 1 hour, drank over 3 hours at 60 degrees.
    Pale yellow to gold color.
Great nose with aromas of pear, melon and slight citrus.
Initial taste of apricot, papaya and ripe melon, with a touch of citrus orange and pear.
Good acidity adding crispness and definition to the flavors.
Tongue coating finish which went on for over a minute.
The flavors and definition were consistent from start to finish thanks to ample acidity.
Mature and in a great place right now. Given the acidity, it will likely continue to hold up for a few more years.

  • 2006 Delectus Cuvée Julia

Cork disintegrated upon opening but I was able to remove it in pieces. Strained the rest with a few flecks of cork.
Garnet color with slight bricking. Still with powerful dark fruit, black currant, black raspberry, just a hint of earthy tobacco. Secondary flavors really starting to shine.
    Tannins are soft and silky.
In a good drinking window. Expect fruit to fade and secondary flavors to become more dominant in the next 2-3 years.
