  • 2014 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Langhe Freisa

Medium ruby in the glass, moving toward garnet but slightly dull. Medium minus intentsity on the nose. Cherry, earth, saw dust, forest floor, savoury/animal note? Leather? Red fruit aromas became more epxressive with time. Dry, medium minus tannins that were soft and developed, medium flavour intensity, medium acid which was fresh and vibrant, medium alcohol, medium minus body, dark sour cherry, pomegranate, raspberry, mushroom. Medium length finish. Great match for pizza and affetato.

  • 2013 Château La Nerthe Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

Suspect that I may have accelerated the development on this bottle when pulling from the cellar and leaving in sock drawer for 2 months - but beautiful deep gold liquid is hard to take your eyes off of in the glass. The bouquet sung with notions of apricot, orange blossoms, acacia, peaches and cream, and lemon oil. There was a touch of tertiary minerality hiding in the background that I couldn’t quite peg. I would bottle this as a fragrance for my wife if I could. The wine was robust across the palate and carried some substatial weight, but the perfectly balanced acid line left an impressively clean palate - pairing perfectly with our brandade and smoked whitefish. A lengthy finish with no cloying viscosity left us wringing out the bottle before our next course.

  • 2011 Darioush Cabernet Sauvignon

Deep ruby core moved toward some garnet inflections toward the rim, but unmistakably dense. Brooding aromas of cassis, black cherry, graphite, white pepper and a charming green note acted as a curtain to deeper notions of campfire and dried coconut. Full and robust across the palate, there was no lack of weight but vibrant acid line and velvety tannins brought a balance that showed the highest level of finesse. At 15.5 the alcohol was assertive, but pronounced fruit tamed it into a luxurious and persistent finish. Could see another 5 years, but open it tonight with a bloody tomahawk and horseradish. Fruit aromas became far more pronounced with 30 minutes of air.
