  • 2004 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Blanc Le Méal

Ripe, orange-ey color and honeyed to start, tho decent acid and well balanced. Started out a bit overripe and thin, then firmed up. Really interesting and enjoyable.

  • 2005 Château Angélus

4-hour decant, and didn’t really open up for another hour after that. Peak was at about 6 hours. Heavily dark fruit driven today, floral on the nose, but solid tannin structure. Ben thought it was close to one dimensional, but Margaret thought it had more going on, and was just young. Probably worth waiting another several years. Quite reminiscent of a big Napa cab today. Might have been much better on day 2, but we finished it :). Bit of a quaffer at this point. 94 today with upside potential.

  • 2010 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage

Triple decanted 3 hours and tried along the way. Restrained nose and tightish palate that slowly opened up, but only after 4 or so hours was it showing its stuff. The nose was spectacular with notes of leather along with darker, deeper red fruit, and well integrated but still noticeable tannins. It had its best window about 4 hours in then the tannins just were a bit too much after dinner at 5 or 6 hours. It reminded us of a too-young ‘99 La Mouline which was crazy exciting given how that last bottle was a top 3 lifetime wine experience for Ben. We are thrilled to have more of this but will wait another 5 years, and one could argue 10 for this to hit it’s real stride. Kinda like that Mouline we still talk about 2 months later…
