  • 2019 Maddens Rise Rosso

This is a stunning summer wine. Very light on its feet but enough gentle tannic backbone to support the velvet fruit profile. A blend of (5?) varietals inc. Pinot, Nebbiolo and Cab et al. At 12.7% abv, it went down a treat on its own but even better with a variety of different food. Dangerously gluggable.
Interestingly the winery is located within sight of the now legendary Yarra Yerring winery. All the wines tasted at Maddens Rise were very smart with several stunners inc. a classically styled reserve Chardonnay and a very moreish Pinot /Nebbiolo Fizz made in traditional method. No fruit bombs to be seen; just elegant, fine grained and more importantly, extremely enjoyable wines. This winery is still off the radar for many but my bet is that it won't be for long. QPR is outstanding.

  • 2008 Chateau Musar

    Superb Musar.
Closed in decanter for 24 hours.
Colour: Clean, spotless, dark ruby. Still youthful.
Nose: A melange of berry fruit compote; a hint of white pepper, sour plum, fig, orange zest, tobacco, herbs and nail varnish. Rhone meets old Garnacha.
Tell-tale hint of volatile acidity that has become a Musar trademark.
Palate: Fruit sweetness tempered by good lick of acidity; Gentle tannin; Exotic spices, fig and sour plum come through with a savoury finish. Slight 'bite' on the back palate.
On the whole this is a delicious Musar that will certainly age gracefully, but why wait? (Will buy more).

  • 2010 Zenato Ripassa

Classic Valpolicella blend. Deep blood red with little sign of development as yet.
On the nose :leather, butter, dark cherries stewed plums and nail varnish.
Palate deliciously smooth and dry on entry with nice acidic, juicy lift on the finish. Excellent balance and built to go for a few years. Medium to full intensity. Drinking nicely now and well matched with Italian food from cured meats to pasta with rich tomato sauces
This wine won the the 2013 Decanter Trophy. Great q/p ratio.
