  • 2013 Dr. Loosen Riesling Blue Slate

Clear, starbright, pale green gold. Interestingly, has a slight effervescence. Nose is complex: I expected less from a riesling this price. There are floral notes, a steely slate-like minerality, light honey and beeswax notes, citrus, fresh lime, cut lemon, and what I described in my notes as 'moss covered stone'. Off dry with high acidity, light body, medium intensity of flavour and a medium length finish. A light, bright, complex wine that punches above its weight. Drink now to 2018.

  • 2010 Grant Burge Riesling Thorn

Petrol and rubber. Pours a rich gold with lemony translucent edges but already I can smell the petrol and rubber. Intense nose, lots of fresh citrus, cut lime, crisp granny smith, and overwhelming kerosene. "Freshly opened can of tennis balls" - I get it now. Medium plus acidity, medium creamy body, medium minus alcohol, medium length finish. Bone dry. A solid riesling for the price and bottle age has done wonders to turn citrus into petrol. Worth every penny. Drink now until 2017.

  • 2013 Palladium Estates Shiraz Watchman

A violet-tinged ruby. Nose is clean but not much else - hints at blackberry and candied strawberry, artificial fruit in general. Slightly odd nose and lacking in intensity. Palate much the same - inoffensive but not much going on. Medium minus body, medium acidity (pleasant), medium tannins with a very slight lingering bitterness. All in all - a quaffer not worth more than $10 and not worth cellaring (although may improve up to five years). Drink now to 2019.
