  • 2019 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Grézeaux

Like every bottle from Chinon, and most CabFranc’s in general, this had some aromas of a recently abandoned outhouse in the Loire. That nastiness fades in time, and then it smells like a long abandoned outhouse in the Loire.

The wine itself tastes great! Chalky tannins and nice acidity temper the tobacco and bell peppers, and what shines through in the end is bright red fruits and a promise of even better things to come in a decade.

  • 2021 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py

I’m cautiously optimistic that this might be my first good bottle from Foillard. While this will definitely require some air, the off flavors that haunted last nights bottle of Fleurie are not there in this wine. Rustic but crunchy fruit.

After a few hours of air, this is actually quite nice. Bright red fruits and enough structure to last a while. Reminds me a lot of Coudert’s cuvée Tardive, except this is twice as expensive and 80%+ more likely to have an undrinkable fault.

EDIT: I will admit when I am wrong. This wine was stunning on day 2, perhaps the best BoJo I’ve had in 20 years. Beautiful fruits and exotic spices. Its best days are still ahead, but I’m not buying future vintages. It is hard to buy a wine when you know that there is a good chance that some, and possibly all of them will be tainted. But when this is good, it is very, very good.

  • 2012 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Le Clos Guillot

Opened as an emergency replacement for a 2018 Baudry Boissee that was punishingly youthful. This has graphite, chalky tannins and boysenberries. There are green peppers on the nose, but that fades into silky fruits on the palate.

This is not yet mature, but a joy to drink now. Perhaps another 5 to 10 years from peak?
