  • 2019 Navarro Vineyards Gewürztraminer Late Harvest

I can't help but think the previous reviewer had gotten a bad bottle to give it only 75 points. I had several glasses this past weekend at the winery and it is fantastic. Floral honey notes with lychee and apricot and a finish that goes on forever. This is one of the best dessert wines made in the USA, bar none. Thick and luscious, in no way would I consider it watered down.

  • 2019 Navarro Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

We received some a few bottles through our wine club membership. We like the Cabernet, grown in warmer inland Mendocino rather than the Anderson Valley. Navarro's approach to their wines is to let the grapes speak for themselves and to stay out of the way manipulating them. This results in a very pleasant old school style cab that is approachable now and I think will improve and last over the next 10 years or so. The nose is all cab with cassias and cherry notes, the taste of our 2 hour decanted bottle was mellow and smooth, a great steak wine. Not super complex, but very drinkable and satisfying.
I'm giving it a 90 for now, but will update as we bought a case.

  • 1963 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Vintage

A dear friend is moving out of state and I had a small dinner party for him. A 2005 Clos de Papes opened for dinner was wonderful, but the star of the night was the Taylor vintage porto. Upon opening and decant it was as expected, very pale and fully tertiary. 3 hours later we poured the first glasses and it had gained considerable color. There was a bit of funk that lessened at the night wore on. The nose was reminded me of a fine old tawny, but with greater complexity. Orange peel, leather, a hint of smoke, did I detect some cardamon? No matter it was wonderful and everything you hope from a bottle of 60 year old vintage port. Too bad I have no more as I think this Porto could last at least another decade if not 2 or 3.
