  • 2004 Bernardus Winery Pinot Noir Ingrid's Vineyard

Opened and aired for 1/2 hour. Medium garnet in the glass. A little floral and some alcohol on the nose, but not much else. Light-medium body in the glass. Light red cherry, black cherry, and some black fruit on first taste, but not too impressive. Fun diminishes as I get deeper into the glass. Stronger mid-palate, with a slightly sharp bite at the back of my throat on swallowing. Medium finish. Overall, a drinkable pinot, but not really impressive in any single attribute.

  • 2004 Papapietro Perry Pinot Noir Russian River Valley

Opened and let breathe for half an hour before drinking with dinner of BBQ chicken and Asian slaw. Wine opened up well over about two hours. Nose started with light cherries, slight spice and some alcohol and progressed over time to deeper red fruits and no alcohol. Bright red cherries and a hint of raspberry on initial tasting, with good mid-palate, and nice medium finish. Opened over time to stronger red cherry, strawberry, more spice and slight cola on the finish. A good representative of general Russian River Valley characteristics, but lacking any strong character that would distinguish it from many others.

  • 2004 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Peay Vineyard

Opened and let breathe for about 1/2 hour before drinking with BBQ. Beautiful medium dark color with light red cherries, light spice, and slight alcohol on the nose. First sip was pure red cherries, bright and refreshing on the mid-palate with medium long delicious finish. A very nice wine out of the bottle, but even better with the sweet BBQ chicken. Just enough acid to cut through the sauce without a problem, and compliment the tender chicken beautifully. This was the favorite PN at the table, where we also enjoyed 2004 Pappapietro Perry RRV, 2004 Paul Hobbs RRV, and an Oregon PN that I don't remember. Overall, very nice to drink alone or with brown sugar-based BBQ.
