  • 2012 Clos St. Thomas Chateau St-Thomas

On the nose, pronounced intensity of charred wood, tobacco, licorice, star anise, blueberries, blackberries, and a little touch of cinnamon.

Medium body Dry wine, acidity high, tannin medium +. There is an astringency factor that has to be considered although will most likely disappear with fatty food.

Despite being 9 years old, this wine is still in the midst of trying to find its personality. It is unclear wether this wine will improve or not with time although possessing all the check marks.

Good for those who like deep Oak and Smokey flavours. But it feels like this wine has been « transformed » too much for me. I can’t enjoy the story the wine is telling me when there is so much distraction.

  • 2013 Wolf Blass Shiraz Grey Label

I like how this wine does not hide its flavours. On the nose, you can already smell dark cherry, tobacco, dried fruits, licorice, peppery flavours. On the palate, same Smoked bbq, fruity, ta coco kind of flavours. Tannins were surprisingly stiff but very enjoyable, acidity medium minus. This is medium bodied very flavourful and well balanced wine, but the finish is rather short. This explains the price difference between this one and the black label. But this wine easily compares with the torbrek cuvées juveniles and IMO is better than the typical PENFOLDS 30$ range bottles. So it’s a good buy. Enjoy!
