A bit on the simple side, ripe dark fruit with mature spicy flavours starting to emerge. Finely wrapped with a light touch of acidity which held the fruit well. Some earthy mineral tingle on the mid palate. Otherwise, a short finish with a light tannic grip but straightforward and lovely to enjoy with some takeaway pizza and a Netflix binge. This will hold at a plateau for 4-6 years with the abundant fruit, so enjoy it!

Lovely luncheon wine, my friend commented. No green meanies from the 2004 vintage, and no worries about concentration or finish here.

Upon opening the fruit was restrained, with the tannins being the most prominent feature of the wine. These have resolved to a point where they gently coat the palate and do not intrude on the pleasure of tasting. A long lingering finish – at least 45 to 60 seconds.

Within 15-20 minutes of airing, the wine begin to flesh out with fruit. Gradually noticeable and then suddenly pure sleek velvet in the mouth. Dark raspberry fruit with a slim vein of herbal bitterness and salinity, with the medium level acidity lending it a crystalline quality. I was struck by how the fruit was sweet and palpably lush but never cloying or sticky.

In the next 1-2 hours, the above features gained in emphasis while the dark mineral aspects of this wine begin to dominant and crackle intensively on the palate and waft out of the glass.

2.5 hours later, the wine was still on an upward trajectory. The scent of fruit was beginning to present itself as dried flowers, which I believe will develop into rose petals. Unfortunately we had run out of it. A fantastic example of top Burgundy’s fluid easeful grace. Everything is in balance. This is a wine that still retains its fulsome primary fruit but is beginning to mature. Drink now with patience, or patiently hold for 5-7 years.
