  • 1999 Talbott Chardonnay Sleepy Hollow Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands

I purchased this 24 year old magnum bottle, along with its big sister double magnum 20 years ago in a silent auction. The double magnum was enjoyed much younger; I squirreled the “smaller” magnum thinking a special occasion would warrant its opening. Occasions came and went; the bottle stayed squirreled. Today I hosted a party. Guests included the people who hosted me to the event which featured the silent auction 20 years ago; the perfect moment to open. I expected the wine to be totally undrinkable; spoiled, oxidized and turned into compost. Removing the foil revealed a cork with dark matter which mostly was easily removed. The cork was wonderfully moist and seemed to be easily removable…until the last bit broke off in the neck. A sniff revealed fruitiness. My attempts to remove the residual piece of cork failed and it fell into the bottle. My friends and I decided to pour around the floating cork. The wine poured a luxurious golden. We all agreed upon a fruity nose. We tasted. “It lives!” my friend exclaimed. Fruitiness, acidity, layers of complexity and a maturity in a Chardonnay that I’d never experienced. It made the entire evening a night to remember, along with the 49’ers losing to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl for the 2nd time in 4 years. I wish I’d squirreled away the double magnum for next year’s rematch.

  • 2012 Cave de Ribeauvillé Pinot Gris Gloeckelberg

Blindsided! Expected a dry wine I could pair with a beautifully grilled fish. Wrongo! (So my backup plan for dinner was an Oregon chardonnay.) After dinner I enjoyed the Alsatian’s sweet pear, candied fruit notes; a wonderful wine. Pair with an equally beautiful blue cheese.

  • 2017 Megan Anne Cellars Pinot Noir Dundee Hills Nysa Vineyard

Megan Anne Cellars is the offshoot of the well known Mark Ryan Winery, whose owners fell in love with the Willamette Valley terroir and today produce some of the most delectable Pinot Noir in the region. Their 2017 Nysa Vineyard makes a shining stance with deep notes of dark cherry, black plum, and roasted coffee balanced in a well-structured body. The wine drinks superbly now but will most definitely benefit from a few years of cellaring. Enjoy a bottle alongside a roasted pork loin or with a cured meat appetizer.

    Nysa Vineyard Pinot Noir

    Wine Details
    Vintage: 2017
    Variety: 100% Pinot Noir
    Appellation: Dundee Hills AVA
Barrel: 30% new French oak, 55% second fill, 15% Neutral Oak, 16 months in barrel
    Vineyards: Nysa Vineyard

    The Vineyard
Nestled at a very high elevation between Domaine Drouhin Oregon and Archery Summit on either side, the Nysa Vineyard is perched on an Eastern slope with gorgeous valley views. This is a late-ripening vineyard, which sets naturally low yields on intense volcanic Jory soils. The 2018 Nysa Pinot Noir is one of the most complex capturing the typical dark cherry notes of the Dundee Hills famous, completed by savory and earthy characters with wonderful textures, good tension, and a long finish.

    Tasting Notes
This deeply colored Pinot has strong notes of kirsch and black plum highlighted with cocoa and roasted coffee that extend onto the full-bodied palate. This is a strong, structured, and intense wine that will reward with cellaring.

    Origins
The Mark Ryan family introduces Megan Anne Cellars, a Willamette Valley Pinot Noir project.
