The first vintage of E Guigal wine from this vineyard was in 1978, as the first overgrown and untended La Landonne vineyard plots were purchased and planted in the early 1970's by Etienne and Marcel. This should not be an option in Cellar Tracker, because the wine was not produced before 1978.
Purchased on arrival in May 2002, and held in 55 degree wine cooler since. My first of several bottles. Decanted after warming for an hour to 62 degrees and given 5 minutes air before tasting. Light garnet red color with tan garnet rim. Focused straight ahead ripe berry fruit with slight notes of old wood char. in the nose. Soft ripe sweet berry fruit with slight dry fuzzy notes in middle mouth and clean berry with slight dry long finish. The wine improved a bit when matched with chicken thighs sauteed with garlic and mushrooms in dry cast iron . After an hour the nose started to get a bit dull, but the mouth and finish held up fine. All together an acceptable mid week wine, that may have another 5 or 8 years of development ahead of it.
On first opening 5 minutes after decanting this wine was showing some hard wood notes in focused berry nose, but now blackberry rather than youthful blueberry of 10 years ago. The mouth displays polished aromas and smooth Merlot taste with cherry & current notes. Tannins have softened over the last 10 years. The long finish features lean perfumed berries and focused (wood) spice. Since opening three days ago, the wine has held up well, with a still youthful subtle polished balance. It is developing well and for the next 10 years should match up well against most Merlot based wines from Pomerol
