2000 SANGIOVESE SONOMA COUNTY - SEGHESIO VINEYARDS
Tasting Notes: This wine opens aromatically to reveal a slight rhubarb quality in balance with red fruit - plums, black cherries, strawberries, cassis, tomato - and a faint leathery note. In the mouth, rich fruit and wood are beautifully integrated, with notably fine-grained tannins contributing to an impression of easy accessibility. This wine is distinctly Chianti in style - with a bit more acidity and tannin. A delicious, drinkable wine now, it can be held for 5-8 more years. Vineyards Story
Alcohol: 14% by volume Total Acidity: .54 g/100ml Total Production: 357 cases
Grapes: The Seghesio Vineyards of Geyserville produce Sangiovese that is refined and elegant, but have an unusual depth that is missing in many California Sangioveses. These grapes are from vines brought from Italy more than 100 years ago by the Sehesio family, who has had more than a century of experience growing Sangiovese in Sonoma County. This wine is 100% Sangiovese.
Vinification: The grapes were picked at 24º Brix on September 16, 2000. To capture and emphasize the delicate nature of Sangiovese, we limit the temperature during fermentation, use of older barrels (Seguin Moreau and François Frères), rather than new, and not blending with Cabernet or other reds that tend to overwhelm delicate Sangiovese fruit.
Notes from Bob Long: When we started producing Sangiovese in 1994, we considered whether to produce a Super Tuscan style - that is, Sangiovese blended with Cabernet, such as Ornellaia and Sassacaia, but with such distinctive fruit available to us from the Seghesios, we chose to produce a Chianti Classico style - 100% Sangiovese - to showcase the fruit characteristics of the variety. Our models were Isola e Olena and Fontodi. Our goal is to make Sangiovese that expresses the Italian style and feeling but fully exploits the ripe fruit character of California.
