  • 2000 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Very deep color from the initial pour into the decanter—deep plum/blackberry coloration. Medium sentiment. Began drinking at about 1 hr 45 mins and it initially had a fair bit of tannins at that point—it drank younger than 20 years. Softened out at about 3 hrs and was pretty enjoyable, and some of the wine’s age began showing through. 2000 wasn’t an overall great year but this was a good bottle nonetheless; still, I probably wouldn’t prioritize it over other other older or newer bottles at a similar price point (unless it’s in your cellar, of course).

Nice color and nose; tasted pretty tight until about 3hrs. Plum, cherries, light mint, slight leather. This wine was probably pretty big and bold 25 years ago but it’s mellowed into a mature, softer wine. Very enjoyable but it wasn’t a “wow” bottle. Probably towards the end of a drinking window (maybe a couple years left).

  • 1993 Robert Sinskey Vineyards Merlot Reserve

Opened a bottle this evening on the porch—cork came out cleanly with a two-prong cork puller. I was a bit worried this was going to be well past it’s prime but it showed well.

Initially brick coloration that colored up to dark plum very quickly. Decanted and tasted at 30 mins, 60 mins, 90 mins, 2 hrs. It was still very tight at 60 mins and needed 90+ to be enjoyable.

Very earthy nose that mellowed some. Tasted like leather and tart cherries, both of which mellowed into a really nice and medium-bodied flavor. Perhaps a bit past its peak but still very enjoyable—I’d drink it again if I can ever find another bottle.
