  • 1995 Château Léoville Las Cases

    Léoville Las cases 1995
Decanted 2 hours before pouring. Deep, jewel-bright purple to rim. The nose was powerful, with damson/mulberry fruits, old desk drawer scents, underscored by cool eucalyptus. The palate had fine-grained but evident tannins, with blackcurrant and leather, pencil shavings and minty oak. Long finish. This bottle was elegant and enjoyable, but some way from its full maturity and remaining stock will be locked away for five years or so. 93 points.

  • 1990 Château Léoville Las Cases

Léoville Las Cases, St Julien 1990
Decanted 1.5 hours before pouring. Beautiful, deep ruby red to rim, no sign of age. Not a powerful nose: elusive scents of cassis, minerals and a hint of leather. The word purity comes to mind - the Bordeaux equivalent of a Puligny? - and this is underscored by the palate. This bottle delivered perfectly resolved tannins, providing the well-integrated structure and depth to support delicious, ripe dark fruit with a hint of cassis, a touch of minerally earthiness and a long finish. Not rich and mouth-fillingly powerful but exceedingly classy, intense, focused and an absolute joy. Wonderful wine at or close to its peak of perfection; it will probably last for many years so no hurry to drink remaining stock. 97 points.

  • 2005 Viña Chocalán Syrah Reserva

Very dark, purplish. Spicy nose. A big wine with high density of spicy damson fruit, some gamey complexity. Quite long. Developed well in the glass and will benefit from decanting for a couple of hours. Enjoyable.
