Yes, I asked myself the same question both times I tasted this wine (in 2012 and last night)! Well the cork was pretty rough, but there were no obvious flaws. The shop I bought from (in August 2012) has no a/c, so summer heat damage is possible. However I think it's much more probable that great French Chenin Blanc simply needs a very long time to mature. Certainly that is my experience of sweet CBs (dating back to a sensational 1959 Coteaux du Layon). I recall tasting very pleasant cheap dry CBs on holiday in the Loire region, so perhaps the sweetness and bitterness which I identified last night is in fact the puppy fat, or "camel's hump" which will enable this wine to mature into something great in 20 years time. And I am absolutely prepared to respect the experience of the professional tasters who have given it an outstanding mark, looking forward to a great future! What I find surprising is that other amateur tasters on CT should find it so delicious in its present stage of development, and am interested to see whether anyone else agrees with my impression, or whether I just have a blind spot for this wine.
