  • 2020 Alvarez y Diez Verdejo Sotomonte

Tasted at 12C(~54F). No aeration or decanting.

    Appearance:
A very pale, clear yellow color. Reminiscent of a stationary pad.

    Nose:
There are easily recognizable primary notes of fresh cut grass, lemon, lychee and pineapple. While the bouquet is of a nice, medium intensity, it quickly becomes apparent that this wine does not go much deeper in its aromatic complexity.

    Palate:
This wine is dry with high acidity; the medium body plays nicely if not predictably with the medium amount of alcohol present. The Flavor is light, primarily consisting of under-ripe green apple, just ripe lemon, kiwi, pineapple, guava, and toasted fennel seeds. The flavor is, at first, quite lovely, but it quickly devolves into a hum-drum cacophony of easily distinguishable (if not tedious) flavors. The end is short and lackluster.

Overall, this wine is clean cut, laissez-faire, and frustratingly elusive. It took me a long time to decide if I liked it or not. While it think it is an acceptable wine to sip on a lukewarm day, I find it is slightly disappointing because the Sotomonte could have really been a rockstar if there was more aromatic complexity or a longer finish. Can this wine live in a properly maintained cellar until 2025? Of course, but the real question is should it? I can't imagine that this wine would get any better with age, drink now and spare yourself the cellar space.

  • 2020 Bonny Doon Vineyard Vin Gris de Cigare

Tasted at 12C(~54F). No aeration or decanting.

    Appearance:
Pale and rose colored, a stunning pink-orange color reminiscent of copper wiring.

    Nose:
Buckle up. This wine has primary aromas of yuzu, grapefruit, fresh apple, ripe watermelon, and red fruits like strawberry and cherry. The aromas are strong enough to be easily distinguishable, but not so strong as to overwhelm the senses; Bonny Doon is making a lot of promises here, I'm curious if she can deliver.

    Palate:
This vin gris is dry, low in acidity and tannins, and surprisingly full bodied. The alcohol content is middling, but this wine is so velvety on the tongue that it really isn't noticeable at all. The flavor is intense and pronounced, with primary notes of fresh, sweet strawberries and raspberries taking center stage, followed by peach, pear, and grapefruit. There are secondary notes of lees, but it is fleeting at best. The finish is long and joyous.

Overall, this wine is surprisingly complex, silky, and playful. I expected to taste this California grown grenache based rosé and shrug my shoulders, but what came out of the bottle truly surprised and delighted me; I'm thankful to have a couple more bottles in my cellar. This wine is drinking wonderfully right now, and should probably be drank sooner than later, as age won't do her more justice.

  • 1992 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley

Tasted at 15C (~60F). Aerated into decanting vessel.

    Appearance:
The Silver Oak cab makes quite an impression with an irresistibly deep, tawny color. This wine is definitely 30, and the first thing she tells you: she's not here to play around.

    Nose:
Pronounced primary notes of black fruit, smoke, tar, wet leaves, and black cherry leaves you gasping for a breath in the best possible way as she elegantly flirts with secondary aromas of tobacco, black truffle, and mushroom. Right as you begin to believe that you've found the depths of her aromatic complexity, she gently and quietly caresses your senses with a tertiary aroma of sweet musk.

    Palate:
Lusciously full bodied and dry with low acidity, medium alcohol, and (due to her age) low tannins. Good gracious is the flavor intense. Primary notes of blackberry, mushroom, tobacco, and blackcurrant leave you tongue tied and begging for more; a feeling that she delivers in spades as she kisses you with secondary flavors of smoke, leather, and vanilla. Just as everything else about this silver tongued devil, her complexity comes out in the tertiary notes of burnt caramel and black coffee. Her finish is long, but somehow it just isn't enough, and you find yourself anxiously reaching for the next sip.

Overall, the time I've spent tasting this wine makes me understand just how good an aged wine can be when kept in the proper conditions. She is poised, elegant, robust, and unapologetic. My only regret is that I don't have another bottle of this wine, though that is likely a good thing, seeing as she is definitely at her peak. Anyone tasting this wine after 2022 would certainly find that she has declined in elegance and charm. Drink right now.
