    This wine is deeply impressive.
When I reached out for the glass for the first time, I thought that someone had just applied their eau de parfum to the glass. After a moment of complete distraction, I came to realize that the spice, fruit and flower bomb was the wine itself. I have to admit I cannot think of a wine that has a nose this expressive. It is hard te describe, but it's fresh herbs, pure red and blue fruits, spices, flowers, flinty minerals and what not. It's ethereal. Although the nose of the wine stands out the most, the wine is sufficiently powerful, distinctive and elegant. On the palate, the wine is expressive and persistent but yet balanced and pure. The purity and aromatic complexity are probably illustrative of the quality of the vine material, the attention and care given to the vines and the artisanship in the cellar. Also the use of oak seems well thought and and balanced. It really does punch above it's weight as this is 'only' a village level wine. The wine keeps developing in the glass, showing new layers over time. This is a wine that just seizes you till the last drop. An unforgettable wine; the pinnacle of what wine can be.

Mr. Kelley, thank you for your attribution to the world of wine, both in word and (this) wine!

  • 1990 Château Léoville Poyferré

The 1990 showed again as a magnificent, monumental wine. On point aromatics, refined nose, delicate red fruits, could easily be mistaken for high-end Burgundy. Perfectly integrated tannins, well balanced, elegant and expressive. The wine also showed decent intensity and longevity.

A proper claret. Not as rich as the 82 and a tad more on the dry-side: spicier, cigar box-cedarwood and more red than blue fruits.
