  • 2007 Rhys Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard

I am still trying to figure this wine out. 6 purchased from the October 2023 Rhys Vineyards Library Offering. This is my 3rd bottle. My recommendations are to make sure it stands up for at least 24 hours, is poured without sediment, and is left to decant for at least 3 hours. Initial notes on the nose and palate are green and vegetal, and only with the time and air do forest floor, mushroom, and soy notes appear. On the palate it still has plenty of acid, the fruit is dark and brambly, but still missing something? Perhaps it needs more time in bottle or decanter, or more careful pouring. I have 3 more bottles to find out.

  • 2011 DuMOL Pinot Noir Aidan

Opened alongside the 2010. Popped and poured. Less immediately accessible than the 2010, drinking a little tight. Lots more acid than the 2010, and fewer fruit flavors, with more earth notes and tannin on the palate. Appears slightly darker than the 2010.

With the bottle open a couple hours the wine becomes more approachable, and paired very well with the meal (salad greens, seafood, spicy tomato broth). The most recent Vinous tasting note suggests 2015-2025 as the drinking window for both the 2010 and 2011, but this note indicates that the 2011 may have a later window (and is the later vintage).

I enjoyed both pretty equally, for different reasons. A fun vertical for comparison.

  • 2010 DuMOL Pinot Noir Aidan

Opened alongside the 2011. Popped and poured. More immediately accessible than the 2011. Soft fruit and earth on the nose, on the palate fine, well-integrated acid, very little tannin, pretty classic Russian River notes. The finish is nice and surprisingly long given the softness.

With the bottle open a couple hours the wine becomes quite delicate, and I don’t think it stood up well with the food (as compared to the 2011). This is, however, a great Pinot to open up pre-meal / with snacks, and it was the initial favorite of the group. I will probably drink my remaining 3 bottles within the next year, though I will space it out to see if the note changes at all.
