Well spirited tannins make this CdR burly and scrumptious. Chocolate, creosote and oatmeal on the nose, early to mid profile offering condensed red fruit, humid earth and expressions of flowers, with smoked cedar, herbs and glimpses of seared steak on the home stretch. Improves significantly given the chance to breath.

Standard low end, reliable Rhone wine. I like this wine because it showcases aspects of what a great Rhone varietal is made of: medium to full bodied herb, spice and berries. The 2005 is simple. Starts off earthy with distinctive mushroom, then moves into a light pepper beneath sweet raspberry with hints of violet. Guigal Cotes du Rhone is a nice, relatively cheap "go to" to avoid the pitfalls of similar Rhone wines that err on being too light, too watery and flavorless.

After uncorking, it displayed strong licorice and cedar on the nose, with some cherry showing through. Upon bottle tasting, it was supple in the mouth, yet the firm, chewy tannins disguised the strengths of wine. So, I decanted this one vigorously, which paid off. It opened up to reveal nice dark cherry flavors with tobacco, and the finish lengthened substantially. It also had a spicy grip (cab. franc), which coupled well with roasted rack of lamb. While the wine was quite simple, it's a solid right bank experience with its old world balance and structure.
