My first of six. Best quality/price value ratio in the business. A lovely Bordeaux(ish), with depth, integration and quality. Find this. Buy this. Drink this.

  • 2020 Sottimano Langhe Nebbiolo

I don’t normally comment on daily drinkers. But since I go through soooo much Nebbiolo - of all ilks - this one really stands out, in a negative way, at least for me. Starts with the nose: almost medicinal. Tannins are appropriate, part of why we like nebb’s so much. But the flavor profile is off. It carries a modest bitterness that cuts through the balance of the alcohol and the acids - unaccompanied by the expected fruit balancer. The result is drinkable but certainly not my normal go-to. As mentioned, I drink gallons of Nebbiolo over the course of a year. I try many of the available Langhe’s in my region (Boston). I’m no wine snob or highly trained and schooled critic. But this one won’t make it back to my cellar. Of my six, the remaining four will find their way as gifts to my required social events.

I have a Nebbiolo addiction. And drink lots of them. But this? 3rd bottle with consistent opinion - this is all angles and elbows. Lean, austere and tannic. Very little fruit, balance, flavor or enjoyment. Will make sure to bring the other bottles to “friends’” parties…. Yeesh.
