  • Only 300 bottles released. Ruby with appropriate bricking; nose has moderate aromatics with some nuttiness, slight salinity; palate is high alcohol and shows some heat, very high acidity, lacking a bit of depth or complexity today; finish is medium-plus length but still without depth somehow. This seems like it's a bit sharp today on its first day open, and many of the other notes here suggest it improves with days to a week. 88-89 for today, and much more expensive than the quality would suggest (and not as good as the Malvasia bottling).
10 days open: A bit more richness and integration on the nose; palate is also much more integrated and has fleshed out and not nearly as sharp as when first opened. I think this has markedly improved from Day 1. 90-91 now.

  • I have had this open for about 5 weeks. It started out quite intense with bracing acidity for the first week or so. the color is a deep bronze making it look wonderful in the glass to me. It began to become a bit more accessible in the 2nd/3rd weeks with the dried fruit showing a little more over the acid structure. It has the richness without the intense sweetness of Malvasia which makes this a nice pairing for rich soups. It reached the best point of balance in the 4th/5th weeks as the fruit, nuttiness, and enough acidity and salinity kept the finish clean.

While not measuring up to a vintage release, it is quite nice for the price and a rarity to boot. My experience says: open it, brace your palate, take a taste, then let it sit for 10 days or so. After that, begin drinking over the next few weeks for maximum enjoyment. Or hold it for as long as you want.

  • One of 300 bottles bottled in September 2011.
The only thing against this wine is its recent bottling and hence its new looking label ( great news for the quality of the wine though) which takes away from that old & ancient madeira mystique.
Still though once you cross that the wine has very little to envy its classic cousins and in many ways we find these Rare Wine Co bottlign to be better and more consistent. Nutty, light oxidative, light caramel and rasiny fruit and very bright, very vibrant wine. Such a joy! 93

  • Wine has been opened for a good 2 weeks. In typical Madeira longevity this has evolved quite a bit but still as fresh as if it was bottled yesterday. Nutty, oxidative full of charm and depth. Firm and very complex. A very worthy 92

  • We have had this wine a few times and the mistake here is to pop n pour. The wine needs its decanting maybe a day if possible but a few hours definitely. Not that it is austere and difficult but it develops with time very nicely.
Medium bodied, an easy style of madeira albeit not as welcoming as a Boal. Nutty, dried fruits , fair amount of caramel. Very solid and full of life.
