  • Ingrid’s Vineyard is 3.5 acres of land planted at the entrance to Bernardus Lodge in Carmel Valley, about ten miles from the Pacific. The proximity to the coast offers sunny weather with cool ocean breezes throughout the summer and fall seasons, which, when combined with fog drawn into the valley from the ocean, provides good conditions for slow ripening grapes with plenty of hang time. Pinot Noir first came to Ingrid’s Vineyard in 1999, and it is currently planted with 667, 777 and Pommard clones. After harvest and fermentation, the wine spent time in French oak (45% new) before 248 cases were produced.

Light ruby in color, this wine has a moderately aromatic nose full ripe red cherry and fresh red raspberry, along with some forest floor, leather and a touch of caramel. Upon sipping, one meets a light-bodied wine with grippy acidity and light tannins. The alcoholic burn is apparent upon swallowing, which aligns with its high alcohol content of 14.0% ABV. The attack features ample fresh red cherry, which is then joined in the midpalate with a riper cherry, some pomegranate, fresh red raspberry, dried cranberry, and a touch of oaky vanilla. The finish is moderately long, starting off with ripe red cherry before fading away after 30 seconds or so with cranberry and an echo of oaky vanilla. It is notable that an earthy tone in the nose is absent in the flavor itself for some reason, though it does reappear in the retronasal smell.

Fruity! Overall, this wine is quite good, but for that price I would like a bit more complexity and flavor intensity, and I would like some of the earthiness in the nose to carry over to the flavor. Not bad by any measure; in fact, it’s quite enjoyable, but for $80 I would like a bit more out of it. A competent wine, but it doesn’t bring anything special to the table that would warrant a higher score.
