Fruity, spicy, and savoury – an amazing package for an excellent price. Initially, this shiraz put forward loads of bold, ripe fruit – blueberries, raspberries, cherries, blackberries, plums – to where I thought that would be the extent of the nose/palate and complexity. However, it didn’t take long for the wine to prove otherwise, with an incredible second wave of herbs, spices, and earthy notes. Past the first few sips, everything was very well integrated and balanced with flavours that were certainly not lacking in conviction. That fruit/spice mix led to a number of wonderfully tasty notes, such as spice cake and banana bread. The tannins were a bit notable, but moderate acidity worked to keep things in check and the mouthfeel was still very pleasant. This bottle was all too drinkable! Given the price point and how far it had travelled to get to my table, I found myself almost consciously searching for flaws. No matter what avenue I went down, however, I was hard-pressed to find any – this is just an remarkably well made wine punching well above its shelf value (and organic to boot!). If you see it, buy it.

Saturday Tasting at The Gourmet Shop Columbia, SC 10/4/2014 (The Gourmet Shop, Columbia, SC): In addition to being Aussie Shiraz, as we expect it, this one is also organic. Deep purple color. Some complexity on the nose with plenty of grapey, blueberry and cherry fruit, but also some wet leather and minerals. Very pure expression of blackberry and blueberry fruit that coats the roof of the mouth and sticks there for a while. Has 14.5% alcohol but handles the heat pretty well. Does not have that brash expression of acid. Only moderately oaked. Some chocolate with the fruit on the finish.
