  • Wondered why I had no CT note on this wine but found my written note from a couple years ago which reminds me not to touch the other bottle for a good long while: surprisingly deep garnet core with orange rim; nose of rich dark red fruit, roses. Beautiful candied fruit, with gamey and spice undertones; acid still there but in perfect balance giving a superb satiny texture. Surprisingly less tertiary qualities than the equally outstanding ‘69 Pierre Ponnelle Musigny it was paired up against. It could have used more of that autumnal quality I love so much in old burgundy. But spectacularly great nonetheless. (Reportedly made by Jean Gros) 96+

  • Drunk last night at my 68th 'birthday bash' with many other exceptional wines. It was served along with 61 DRC Echezeaux and 69 Leroy Chappelle-Chambertin (unfortunately corked). This bottle was pristine and was obtained directly from Remoissenet many years ago. Fill and color were perfect. In the glass it appeared much more youthful than one would expect for a wine of this age with a mild degree of bricking on the rim, but with a dark ruby core. The perfume was lovely from the get go and in addition to the secondary and tertiary notes, there was an unexpected amount of fruit. Tannins were totally resolved with a soft, full and rich mouth feel, finishing with a lingering finish. This was quite an elegant wine and certainly ready to drink, contrasting with the 61 Echezeaux which also was excellent, but has several years of life left. On final analysis, however, I did give the nod to the 53.
