Waited too long to drink it. Previous bottles I had of this vintage were super good. There were still good flavors left , but they were followed quickly by an aftertaste of a wine way past its prime. It was cellared since I bought it. I cooked a nice braised beef with it.

Tasting jammier and more extracted than the last bottle. This has nice bright raspberry and black cherry fruit, kirsch, soy sauce, balsalmic, and leather notes. Tasting a bit heavy handed and not as elegant as the last bottle. I still have a couple more so we shall see if this is just btl variation. In either case, this remains very interesting and fun to explore prieto picudo.

Amazing that 4 bottles of this were hidden away in a box in the cellar for almost a decade and I had no idea what I had. In looking through old reviews online it seems this was panned, seen as overpriced (?overhyped), and perhaps that is why it was sold off at a substantial discount (about $36 vs $80). My recollection of the cheaper 07 Pricum prieto (I forgot the name of that cuvee) bottles I had previously is that they were just OK, but it was my first experience with the varietal and I appreciated it for the geek factor. This, the Valdemuz, is a different beast: out of this world and clearly on another level, and any suggestion that it is anything but is misguided. Amazing terroir that tastes like nothing else than NW Spain. There is much similarity to a high-end mencia (i have no idea if the prieto is related), but greater depth of flavor and way more complex. Ripe bright round crunch cherry fruit (gobs of cherry, almost syrupy, but not at all overripe, cloying, or international). While I am not a fan of oak in these type of wines, here it elevates the deeply concentrated (yet impeccably balanced and light on its feet) wine and seems appropriate for the degree of extraction. I love the style here, I would say closest to a top-flight and appropriately aged Lapierre Morgon (not Margon, heehee) mixed with a great DdJP Bierzo. There is nothing not to like here. I could drink this s#$t all day long.

Agree with other posters that there was a bit of a metallic taste. Blackberries on the palate, as it reminded of tart black fruit. Not bad, could possibly have rated this higher. Probably would have gone better with food.
