This week has been a Malbec week. Two nights ago, popped the '07 Arrowood and although aromatically correct, it was lacking any notable mid-palate and had a somewhat shallow finish (86). Tonight was a different story but in all fairness, we had the creme de la creme lineup. The (Hobbs) Cobos was Cali-modern with a huge, chunky, fruit entry; a real nice mid-palate complete with a fruity richness and ripe, fruit-dominant finish (90-92). The final bottling was an uber-exclusive, produced for Argentinian domestic consumption, single vineyard, beauty - '05 D.V. Catena 'Adrianna Vyd'. Though it was clearly meant for fatty red meat, it didn't require that to enjoy the experience. Nice, subtle aromatics with a fruit profile to match. The transition to the mellow mid-palate made you wonder if it had the structure to support the hype...then you were hit with the firm, tannic finish. Did I mention this was built for a fat slab of red meat?!

Though restrained and closed down initially, the aromatics blossomed after open for 1+ hours. Very elevated acidity and huge tannins. The whole package started coming together but just as we finished the bottle. Arrowood's wines are almost ridiculously long-lived, though all things considered, this was only a year or two from being ready. Amazing deep, dark purple color. I'll be curious to see how this develops in a couple years, at which time it will likely earn a couple more points.

The wine looks Garnet colored. The legs are Medium. It tastes like Prune, and Strawberry Jam.
