Reference to earlier tasting notes might lead one to expect the wine was ‘over the hill’. Not at all, it opened beautifully and was a lovely drink. Lots of class here.

Decanted 1 hour. Very youthful appearance with deep ruby/purple core and narrow pale ruby rim. A little closed on the nose at first, opening out to reveal ripe plums, blackberries with peppery notes. On the palate this is a medium + bodied wine with ripe plums and blackberries and a good dose of pepper and spice. This actually has lovely elegance and class, with ripe, fine tannins and lovely fresh acidity on a decent length finish with attractive savoury notes. Not heavy at all, really lovely, drinking very well, but should be no particular hurry.

Hmmm, tannins have definitely started to mellow out. Excellent fruit coming through with spice and texture. Lighter than I would have expected, thinking I have some real bottle variation in the cellar at the moment.

Newcastle Wine Club - October 05 (Amici's Italian Restaurant, Hamilton): Drinking very nicely. Lots of white pepper on the nose which flows through into the palette. Ruby red hues. Sweet fruit hits at the back of the palette. Overall body light but with lots of flavour. Tannins are showing well integrated. Flavours of mushrooms and black cherries. Classy wine. Still has a few years left.
