Not a big cote du Rhône drinker but would come back to this one. Dark ruby/purple. Perfect tannic structure. Hot but drinkable; not too thick or full. Garrigue and violet and some darker fruit.

A marvelous example of Old Vines Grenache from CdP. Gave it a 2 hour decant. Opens with Kirsch, some baking spice and basil. Not smelling any overripe, nor hotness; although does initially smell Californian. Medium bodied and generously fruited. Tannins there, but in check. Mild heat; considering it’s 15.5% alcohol. Served with Steaks; which was ok. This can age and maybe arrive to a better wine. Just arriving at it’s drinkability stage.

Vinturi aerated followed by a 2 hour decant. Cassis, herbal notes and some heat on the nose. Full bodied with some pleasant spiciness with deep layers of dark berry fruit. Medium long finish with fruit and peppery notes.

Feels like this is starting to come around. PnP, by the end of bottle we were starting to see some balance. Still rather over-played but enjoyable and with upside… wait another 3-5 on remaining bottles.

(SIMIAN Grandes Grenachières CdP) Rhone Dear Friends, This is a special one – it does not require a Shakespearean soliloquy. Last year’s 2007 Simian Chateauneuf-du-Pape Grandes Grenachières d'Hippolyte was one of the toughest tickets in town. It’s become as close to a cult wine (without the oak) as I’ve seen in modern CdP (i.e., a post Rayas/Bonneau world). Certainly others stand at center stage but most have moderate or even large scale distribution at this point – not the Grandes Grenachières d'Hippolyte... It remains an enigma. A well-priced enigma at that. With the 2007 version currently trading for $125-175/bottle, the 2009 is a relative bargain. From one of Chateauneuf du Pape’s most dramatic vineyards (up to 130 years of age), this virtually unknown/unobtainable wine hails from 95-98% Grenache kept in tank or old cement (you can forget oak use here). “Luxury” cuvee to Simian means the best fruit and smallest berries from their 100% BIO/organic gnarled old-vine vineyard – not the toastiest cooperage. To Jean-Pierre Serguier, dumping this coddled pressing into new barrels would be a travesty. Yes, the flaws would be covered and the consumer would be fooled, but why bother? Thankfully, he doesn’t. Nether did Jacques Reynaud and neither does Henri Bonneau... While this micro-production wine is still obtainable for a modest tariff... ONE MINISCULE PARCEL at this price directly from the winery cellar with perfect provenance (if we are sold out when you reply, we will have a few cases on a second parcel at the regular in late Spring): 2009 Chateau Simian Chateauneuf du Pape “les Grandes Grenachières d'Hippolyte” - (the 2009 is not commercially available at this time, you’ll have to check pricing for the 2007 - it wasn’t produced in 2008) Please give us your maximum number and we will allocate accordingly (please be patient with Niki - she is going to have to sift though a large number of responses to allocate this - she will do her best to get everyone at least one bottle). This parcel is set to depart the cave – it will arrive at some point in January/February, when Jean-Pierre gets around to sending it (please check OARS for local pick up in February 2011). It will ship during the Spring shipping season. Out of state orders will be held for free under ideal storage conditions (56 degrees/70%humidity) until shipping is possible. It was definitely good with the charcuterie and my rabbit entree.
