  • After 6 years this still retains a youthful cranberry hue from most every angle. Cinnamon, sandalwood, raspberry, earth, and cherry. No element of pine resin. It all translates cleanly on the palate. The mouthfeel is somewhat light. The quality of this wine is lacking, but it’s not without some rustic charm. Some slight sediment and a shadow on the shoulder. 13.9% alc. With pizza of mushroom, pepperoni and onions. Recommended with reservations.

  • Cranberry color from rim to core with perhaps a touch of brick on the very edge of the rim. The nose is sandalwood, raspberry, earth, cherry and pine resin (only a touch of a the latter). Much the same on the palate with a medium leaning light on the mouthfeel. The finish is earthy sandalwood with some tea notes. This reminds me of the quality of Virginia wines from 15 years ago, which is to say that the quality of the wine is lacking. Yet, the wine isn’t without interest, if nothing more than being a data point. Some slight sediment in the final pours. 13.9% alc. With assorted meats (smoked turkey, molé, toscano, and ham - both country and Surryano) and cheeses (Hayley Bazen blue (Vermont), Prince de Fontaine, truffled cheeses, etc.) Recommended with reservations.

  • Tasted with six other Cabernet Franc based wines including Chateau Ausone, a nice Chinon, Paradigm Napa, Lang and Reed 2009, and Hiddencroft of Northern Virginia. The Afton came in last, was distinctly more vegetal but I agree more with the Virginia Governor's Cup judges that gave it a Silver than my colleagues who thought it was "flawed". Aromas of herbs and Chinon type character, dry and not fully ripe on the palate, medium short finish. Lots of character, if not for everyone, but not technically off due to VA or brett or poor cellar/bottling hygiene. Paired well with an Indian lamb stew, Aloo Ghosh.

  • used 1/2 bottle in the wet smoke for smoked duck on Thanksgiving 11.24.11. Drank the rest with DDB & BBH. No note, but the wine is still young, tannic with some cherry notes
