  • Followed over 6 hours.

Funky blend, dark blue and red fruit. Very Charles Smith (big) but balance is off (acidic) and Heat is too much.

Not dead but likely best days are behind and doubt this is goimg anywhere good.

Sorry for the downer note, calling it as I see it: one for the neighborhood party or when the wife is away and you need to do your pennance for bad wine choices.

  • Last had this about 18 months ago and that bottle was very savory and not showing a lot of fruit. I was expecting this one to be even more in that direction but was surprised at the forward ripe blackberries that accompany the dark chocolate and wood smoke notes.

This bottle came from the same retailer but was shipped to me several months after the first one. It just goes to show how every bottle is different. Also features a very smooth, viscous (some would say unctuous) mouthfeel. I'm somewhat regretting opening this last bottle of 2009 El Jefe since in retrospect, this wine could have easily continued to improve for another several years if stored properly. Superb nonetheless and we enjoyed every sip of this.

  • Nose is totally savory; wood smoke, earth, and soy. Dense but elegant, soft but not shy, with blackberry, tobacco, spice, and pepper. Big tannin and big finish, with lots of length.

  • Acquired this wine for the interesting blend of WA state tempranillo (66%) and cabernet (34%). This wine is featuring very little fruit at this point. It was all woodsmoke, dark chocolate, and pepper with a long, moderately tannic finish. Really paired quite nicely with the manchego stuffed poblano peppers my wife served for Easter.

  • Infanticide! Blueberries, thyme, and pepper hiding behind a massive wall of tannin. Took hours to open up into a silky monster. Endless finish.
