  • Old Barolo Night (Bar-a-Thym, Singapore): I liked this a lot more than the last time I had it. If not the wine of the night (in the midst of a very strong field), this was pretty close to it. A bit richer and sweeter than the 1990 Ceretto Grignore in the same flight, this had a beautiful nose of tar and roses, dark cherries and earth, than some mineral and spice. The palate was clear and bright, with juicy acidity and a chew of strong, fine tannins adding a great sense of structure to strong, wonderfully detailed flavours of dark red cherries, lined with mineral and spice. Strong and sinewy, with a wonderful long, focused finish that suggested at spice and tar and dried earth - this was fabulous. It just went on and on in the mouth. Not quite as charming and pretty as the Grignore, but I thought this was the stronger wine in terms of structure and substance. It has a higher upside too, and probably needs a few more years to reach peak as well. Super.

  • Vinetasters: Brown Bag (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. Corked, but still identifiable as nebbiolo based on the tannic structure.

  • Gathering at Brian's (Brian's Home): Aromas of roses, earth, crushed cherries with a hint of balsamic vinegar. Palate continued the tart cherry theme with added leather, earth, bitter herbs, tar and tobacco. Finishes with prominent tannins and lots of bass note earthy bitterness. High toned but the bass notes are simultaneously prominent. The prominent, borderline harsh bitterness on the finish decreased the enjoyment of a very nice wine for me.

  • Deeply pitched with blood plum, black cherry and liquorice notes. There’s some tar and cedar as well. It is dense and fleshy and there’s a suggestion of cranberry lightening things up. Tannins are buried just below the flesh for now and it is a modern wine that lacks no character and is a delicious drink with plenty left in the tank.

  • This is one of those delightful wines equally at home with a rich beef stew as it is on its table all alone. There are earth and tar and smoked meats along with sweet, fresh berry fruit. It is glossy and polished and tannins are slow-burn, only igniting as the sweetness fades in the mouth. There’s some Indian spice complexity with further air. It has latent power and is a Barolo that despite its deliciousness is still juvenile and far from maturity.
