Dark color. Closed, cool, intense licorice nose. In the mouth, Savigny earth and "tree roots," black and blue fruit with frank tannin. Dramatically more accessible with buffering food, but needs another two or three years.

Medium ruby. Classic, pungent, briary aromatics of black licorice and blackberry. Medium to light weight, raspy acidity, dry but ripe black fruit. It was interesting to drink this after a Chambolle last night. Both wines began with the brambly black fruit and crunchy acidity, but the Chambolle turned out to be much more airy, floral, and elegant. This is a more rugged wine, albeit not at all heavy.

Halloween Ball (Heirloom Cafe, San Francisco): Dark ruby. Briary black fruit nose. Lean, full of black licorice but approachable. Good and very Savigny.
