Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • What a strange bottle. We bought this Riesling as a part of the Rheingau collection a year ago. There are a couple of strange things about this bottle: The wine is in a 1 liter bottle. In 1934 it was very unusual to fill wine in these bottles. Usually the use the 700 ml bottles. Second: No capsule! Schloss Johannisberg has/have colored capsules for the different quality levels of their wines. A "Cabinett Wein" these days was at least Auslese quality. The cork was old, yes, but 76 years in this bottle?
The color of this 1934 Schloss Johannisberg "Cabinet-Wein" is slightly yellowish-golden. The nose is dominated by woodruff, unripe green apples and some mushrooms. On the palate there is a hint of sweetness, paired with a musty mushroom component and a slightly attacking acidity. The finish is a kind of long, based on woodruff and green apples. It's past its petrol stage, so I guess the year may be right - compared to the 1932 Steinberger Riesling we had last year.
