  • Vino Me opened this after dinner at Otis' when Tom and Deb Mortimer were in town. This was by far the oldest port I have had, and was a real treat to try. Light brown in color, resembling a pale tawny port. Notes of caramel, toffee and dried fruit. On the palate, flavors of roasted nuts, spices, toffee and caramel lead to a very long finish. While this was very good, it was too close in style to a tawny at this stage in its life. A good reference point though, for if vintage port develops this nuttiness at almost 60 years, I know I can drink my vintage ports younger. Thanks for sharing this unique bottle VM.

  • This was given to me as a gift earlier this year by a neighbor who was moving his Father out of the long time family home and into his home. He offered me a couple cases of mixed wine which had been sitting in his Fathers basement for many years. I took this to Otis' house last night and shared it with some of the CWM, Tom Mortimer and his wife (owners of Le Cadeau vineyard) who were in Chicago for Thanksgiving and brought their Pinot's for us to try. This was paired with a Grand Marnier and coconut flourless chocolate cake that my wife made. A.J. da Silva is the company that used to own Quinta do Noval. Antonio da Silva retrofitted Quinta at Noval and replanting the vineyards after Phylloxera hit the Douro valley. In 1973, A.J. da Silva was replaced by the name Quinta do Noval. 1947 was a good year for Port getting a 9 out of 10 on the Berry Bros. scale. The outside of the cork looked like it was practically new in this 59 year old bottle. It was a short cork and the wine had only soaked about 1/3 of the way though which inidacted that the bottle may have been stored upright for much of its life. No signs of seepage. I decanted this just before serving to remove a small amount of sediment. This was a phenomenal wine that far surpassed my expectations and I think everyone elses at this dinner. A golden color with a slight brownish hue. Rich carmel filled nose that was simple gorgeous. Very lively and could have lasted longer. This was a full bodied port. Solid tannins with a nutty character. Notes of burnished red fruit, toffee and brandied cherries. Long, long complex finish that showed some spiciness. I can almost still taste this the next day. A true classic. 98 points.
