  • Not quite as good as the last one two years ago, albeit still very fresh and spritely. Quite a lot of brett and although the redcurrant and cherry flavours are very appealing, there's a lack of complexity - tasting this after a recent 2016 made me realise the progress made in recent vintages.

  • Loire night: Bordeaux-like with the oak on the nose, light red fruits with a little rusticity on the palate. Still very fresh, I think these Loire reds age gracefully and are a terrific value, albeit without the same complexity or depth as a good Bordeaux. Liked this a lot more than others at the table.

  • As Eboracum wrote last year, this is Bordeaux CC standard. I tried it over three evenings and it was best on the third. Wild strawberry, raspberry and blackberry aromas, with a bright attack of the same before a more restrained, elegant middle section and a powerful, persistent finish. No sign of any tiredness, this is less immediate than the 08 but somehow more persistent and certainly more elegant. Highly recommended.

  • This Chinon was definitely superior to yesterday's Cantemerle '11. It had the advantage of greater maturity but I don't see that Cantemerle ever equalling its robust medium+ body, purity and fragrance of its plum and raspberry tinged fruit, earthy minerals, leather hints and perfect oak integration, all enhanced by lively moreish acidity, backbone and good length. Leading Chinon (and Bourgueil & Saumur-Champigny) would IMO be high in a GCC class, if at Bordeaux. Very good.

  • From Coteau de Noiré, a south-facing slope with soils of clay and limestone. First whiff worried me a little bit because of some creamy oak. But luckily, it "disappeared" with air and was just part of the wine, well integrated. There's something Bordeaux like both on the nose, palate and structure. But this is also definitely Chinon with a very good freshness and balance. Some cassis notes with something a little green like when you smell a fresh tree branch you just cracked. Floral with violet. Med body, despite the structure there's a certain lightness to the wine. Tannins are quite tight, especially on the finish.
This was good but I was maybe expecting more complexity. And based on the tannins, I would not age this wine too long.
