  • as with most wartime or older bottles, provenance and storage are key, let alone for a white; respectable 3cm ulage; yellow gold, hint of green shiver, drawing remarkable legs in the glass; fairly fresh, clean and slightly oxydised but still rich, with ageing flavour of lemon peel evolving towards old straw. Past its best but considering it's wartime Chardonnay, this is as good as it gets! (91P)

  • The oldest wine I have tried by quite a margin, and it's a white (Burgundy) on top of that... Completely soaked and almost black cork but basically came out in one piece. Given the age of the wine, the color looks quite youthful, a relatively light amber. The most unusual nose with a very strong mushroom smell, not the champignon type, rather like freshly collected and cut Suillus / slippery jacks. On the palate fairly high acidity with lemon notes and again those mushrooms and perhaps a very faint Sherry note. Very long and hard to describe finish.
A very unusual experience of a wine made in WWII. Took a number of sips but did spit all of them except for one.
