A surprisingly dark yellow color. Nose is one intense aromatic explosion of deep, rich lemon fruit, stonefruits, crushed rock and yellow florality. On the palate fairly weighty with high acidity. Starts off quite citrusy and stony, finishing extremely citrusy and stony. No fat really, but somehow feels a bit forced with its concentration and certainly could be leaner and more ascetic. Towards finish a tea-like component that I'm not too fond of. Not bad really, but I'm left with a feeling that perhaps I would've enjoyed a "lesser" wine more. We'll see how this develops.

Light-medium yellow-gold. Very concentrated on the nose with pit fruits, minerals, broth, green apple and apple cider. Not completely dry - excellent mouthfeel, plush but focused: put fruits again. Very minerally on the solid finish. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16.5/20.

Theise/Skurnik DI tasting. My favourite trocken at the tasting. A lot of the others felt either a little heavy/clunky or austere, this is neither - stony, fresh, pure and beautifully balanced with a lightness of touch that's remarkable in the vintage.

(Spreitzer Wisselbrunnen Riesling Erstes Gewächs) ($41.00) The Rosengarten’s juicy and ripe enough to manage without RS in Andreas’ modern polished vinification, though it’s the less substantial wine in terms of minerality. Wisselbrunnen is potentially better but it’s also more austere, though strangely it has a smoother finish. I wasn’t sure what to do at first. Then we added just a smidgeon of sweetness to both wines (still keeping them under the silly limits for legal-Trocken), and Rosengarten was basically solved, it no longer felt parched for balance. Wisselbnrunnen felt as dry as before yet it had an even stronger minerality, length and a finer finish. All from a dose of sweetness as small as a few crystals in a teacup.

VdP Rheingau Wine Presentation (Kloster Eberbach): Similar make-up as the Rosengarten but more floral and fragrant, charming for a 2010.
