Unscrewed and poured. Complex aroma of lichee, apricot pit, and a touch of petrol. Rich flavors of pear, minerals. Apricot nectar finish. Still fresh, electric, firm backbone, complex, great staying power. Excellent, though I suspect it will be even better in the next few years.

(Messmer Muschelkalk Riesling Kabinett Feinherb) ($24.00) It means fossil-bearing limestone, and whenever you find it you find a spicy tangy Riesling that’s oblique to fruits or flowers. As expected, the ’10 density wipes away any sense of tartness or austerity. (Times like this I love this work!) A little phenolically nubby, but vivid and complex and a perfect restaurant Riesling, with charm and length both up the ying-yang and out the wazoo. But it’s the classic one-at-a-time wine. It doesn’t “show” well unless the lineup is smallish and the sequence calibrated. A spice-driven Riesling that’s more zingy than voluptuous reveals itself at the table, not in the tasting room.
