  • According to our guru/teacher/dealer Carlo Merolli, the Lazio pinots from Casal Pilozzo were "the unsuccessful". Grown in volcanic soil, from a torrid vintage, our hopes were quite modest. But as long as you don't expect a burgundian expression, this pinot does a pretty good job. Colour is brownish red with brick rim. The nose has a nice development, with iron minerals, rose petals, leather and delicious, slightly cooked fruits - a bit like a brunello light, actually. After decanting we get a bit of co2 in the glass that goes away with an extra volta in the carafe. A full and tasty wine - rich in aromas, mentholated and mineral. Its vintage can be detected by the drying and foursquare tannins, but it's still quite enjoyable. Far from unsuccessful, actually.
