This one has substantially matured since I first tried a bottle about 6 years ago. 10 years of age has taken the edge off, reduced the oily bitterness that sometimes affects Roussane, and allowed the 10% Viognier to integrate seamlessly to create a unified whole. Not fruit driven at all. There is an earthy, meaty flavor to it with a long very smooth, almost velvety finish finish. It is very difficult for me to describe a wine that is both smooth and velvety on one hand but meaty and surely with real substance on the other hand.
In a funny way, I think if the dark side of the force had a really good want to go with it, it would be something like this. Nothing fruity or floral, bone dry, with a bit of acidity, but not enough to be sharp. If a Riesling Kabinett feels very light in the mouth, this is the opposite. Went very well with secured tuna, roasted broccoli and spaghetti squash with the lemon artichoke pesto.

This had a bit of a funk to it, and was exceedingly dry and sour. To the extent the fruit was detectable, it was sour peach and apricot. The alcohol was noticeable. My wife had the same reaction, though we both agreed it was better as it warmed up.
Not rating this, and initially I marked it as spoiled. As the night went on, it was clear it did not perform well over-chilled. It performed much better at a temp just under room temperature.
We have had previous vintages and liked them a lot, even if a bit overpriced. If the second one performs the same, I doubt I will by this wine again. Might be worth contacting Joe and Tripp because their customer service is impeccable.

The Rhone Rangers (City Winery, 155 Varick Street, New York, NY 10013): The nose showed peach with citrus, spicy floral note and wet mineral stone. On the palate, it was soft and caressing with white fruits and a core of tart apple acidity and minerals. The finish was long and staying with spice notes and citrus fruits.

Gorgeous nose and fantastic on the palate, but query whether it is too pricey.
