This was showing quite nicely, with a little herbal note, good fruit, elegance, nicely perfumed and aromatic with exotic spice. Guessed Vosne 1er. Finally an Ilan that I like! EH b-day at my place.

Nose of mushroom, tilled earth and static charge (like the air after a lightening storm). Cherry, iron, and herbs combine nicely on a fairly long finish. Seems like some serious bottle variation based on prior notes posted here. No green notes for me.

On the pop and pour, this is quite dark in the glass. I’ve had a lot of Oregon Pinot recently, and this is darker and denser than most of those. The nose is very funky, with loads of barnyard and cheese, a good heap of green pepper, and maybe just a bit of steamy, stewed cherries in behind. The front end of the palate has a bit more of the red fruit, but the mid-palate still had a lot of both the green and the barnyard. There is structure here, and a fair amount of acidity, although the wine still comes across as a little burly. The finish lasts a good long while, but it is not entirely balanced. I try to use the same scale as most publications, which makes the 86 equivalent to roughly “you can drink this, but you’d probably prefer to have something better”. Given that I paid, direct from the winery, $102 all-in (price, shipping, and tax), that makes this one of the poorest values I’ve ever had. 2011 was a below-average vintage, so I’ll have to hope 2012 and 2013 came off a bit better.

This bottle was excellent, well integrated, balanced, maybe at its peak. Went perfectly with roast duck.
