I bought a case of this for a killer price and this was my last bottle. The first few bottles were great, but those that followed were less than stellar. This was a return to the beginning. After being open for a bit, great fruit and complexity. Outstanding. thedrunkencyclist.com

etail $40. I bought a case of this wine a year and a half ago for $14/bottle from the PLCB and the previous 10 bottles we have gone through varied considerably. Some were on the verge of Outstanding, others were barely Good. This bottle fell closer to the latter. An initial nose of stewed fruit did not bode well and hinted that these wines were possibly mishandled at some point. (Really? A wine mishandled by the PLCB? Shocking.) The stewed note subsided a bit, and the wine eventually showed some nice red fruit. Good to Very Good. 86-88 Points.
I picked this up from the PLCB (the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board–the state run monopoly/disaster) for $14. While certainly not a household name, Demuth Vineyard in Anderson Valley carries a bit of caché with Pinot-philes as it is one of the highest vineyards (1700 feet) in the appellation and is known for producing high quality cold climate Pinot. For years, the Demuths typically sold off most of the fruit, but kept a bit of it for their own label. The Demuths retired in 2011, selling off their vineyard to another winery.
It took a little while for the wine to get going–there was a stewed aspect initially that was a little worrisome (this is the eleventh bottle of this wine we have had and the first that had this issue). After a while, the wine settled down and was quite pleasant (no doubt aided by the fact that the Buckeyes were on the screen), but by no means a blockbuster. Still, a really good wine, and a steal at $14.
I was not as thrilled with this wine this time around for whatever reason. Maybe it was my long day at work, maybe it was my whinny four-year-old, maybe it was just different. Who knows? It was a bit thin and not that exciting….
