  • Blackberry, smoke, rosemary, grilled meat, mineral, old cellar nose. Dark berry, spicy, a touch barny, maybe a little hollow, finishes bitter. Mature and not going to get better but pretty tasty right now.

  • Had the '01 Finca Sandoval last night, and it has gotten to a pretty nice place. Lots of blackberry, bing cherry, and plum flavors. The midpalate was initially a little hollow, but seemed to fill in during later glasses. Not oaky. A bit of barnyard and some gamey flavors (but not overwhelming, as my wife is averse to this beyond a certain threshold). Only real negative is that the tannins were a bit chalky (maybe sediment got stirred up?). Definite B+ wine (I'm a pretty tough grader, so this would put the wine solidly into the "would buy again" category).

Performed much better than another '01 FS which I had back in '09 (I would have called that one a B-).

Amused as hell by the CT notes which say this is over the hill. If that's the case, I'd blame poor storage. Otherwise, I'd speculate on the subconscious influence of the "2004 to 2009" Wine Spectator drinking window.

  • I barely remember this from a week ago. I think it was past it's prime but still had an interesting aspect to it.

  • My last one of these, and frankly drinking as well or better than ever. No longer my style, really; but not over the top. Good fruit, but balanced -- maybe a hint of heat from the alcohol. Overall, very nice.

  • STG does Syrah: sweeter and meaty next to the South African wine, it also felt just the teensiest bit flatter, but I enjoyed it. Definitely high on the 'delicious' factor, though not super complex.

Rockss and Fruit

(Finca Sandoval) A a nose of blueberries, grilled meats, exotic spice, soy sauce, maybe a hint of kerosene too. Great varietal character on the nose. Supple and silky with great balance. Pure fruit with great concentration and persistence. Dark and meaty flavors persist in the mouth long after swallowed. Thoroughly ripe tannins with ample sweet fruit. Great stuff.

(Finca Sandoval) What a great wine! 93% Syrah and 7% Mourvedre. Nice aromas of grilled meats, scorched earth, mineral, raspberry, chocolate. Beautifully balanced palate with elegant fruit, good amounts of glycerin and very juicy finish. This wine had great symmetry. So well put together.
