  • Purchased upon release, this is the first time we’ve opened a bottle and I’m super pleased that we opened it now. Carignan can be unapproachable young and we weren’t sure how this CA sourced Carignan from 100 year old vines would be, but is is currently smooth and open.

PnP into Zalto Burgundy glass, then had over 3 hours to taste the early evolution. Would’ve like to had some left for day two... but, not this time.
Initially smelled like Welches grape juice, though over time a resinous and earthy leafy scent arose from the glass as well. Wife says eucalyptus.
Purple fruits, black pepper, and baking spices are the first things that cross the palate, but the finish shows some underbrush and tobacco leaves.
The texture is medium bodied and smooth, sailing along on a current of juicy acid, only to show some fine grained tannins towards the long tapering finish.
It doesn’t ring with Carignan typicity, but rather comes across a little like an austere Primitivo. That said, tonight’s bottle was absolutely singing and encouraged such repeat visits that there is none left for tomorrow.

  • Excellent, well balanced wine. As suspected, excellent smoothness developed over the past 2 years.

  • As others have stated, this needs time. Opening an evening in advance goes a long way as night 2 this was great stuff. Earthy undertones with lush fruit all there and a nice long finish.

  • Awesome carignane from 100 year old vines in San Joaquin. Love it!

  • The wine kept its flavors tight for hours while decanting. Only after, the earthy nose and deep dark fruity taste came forward. Ended up being an enjoyable experience, but may need to keep this in the cellar for a few more years.
