Opened in a disappointing way...a bit thin, a touch hot and short. Air and time made a world of difference... wine gained size and presence, added complexity through secondary flavors and texture. Enjoyable.

Ruby maroon fading to pink at the edge, medium plus viscosity. Nose of dark cherry, earth, eucalyptus. Muted red fruit on the palate, dominated by forest floor, dusty, leathery elements; there's a subtle lilac/violet thing that comes out retronsally on the finish that adds interest. Nice acid streak, low alcohol (13%), medium plus weight in the mouth. The tannins still feel a bit jagged/unintegrated in a way that makes it seem more rustic than expected. Given the age, I'm doubtful these will soften a lot more, but will keep an eye out for this with future bottles. Definitely screaming out for food accompaniment. The earth/fruit balance here is pleasantly old world and anti-international. Delightfully informal and fun quaffer, if something of (an Italian version of) a country bumpkin.

Fairly translucent ruby, with no purple to speak of, the nose is full of bright red fruits including cherry and pomegranate, backed by some attractive dustiness. In contrast to the fruit of the nose, though, the palate is very dry, although with substantial acidity. The fruit is very muted, unfortunately, and there is little in the way of tannin or complexity on the palate. The finish is pretty short. The acid makes this OK with food, but the rest falls pretty short in my book, and doesn't live up to the $17 CT value, let alone the $24 price actually paid for the Garagiste Mystery Case. This one is a definite miss.
