  • Farewell to the Agees (Our House, Hong Kong): 3 bottles ought on release and cellared since 2009....this is the first to be opened. Perfect cork only stained on the bottom and looked like it had only been bottled yesterday. Decanted for 4.5 hours (which seemed about right) then slowly enjoyed over 3 more hours. Opaque black/purple colour. Nose initially has some varnish remover high notes that quickly blew off to reveal sun-warmed eucalyptus trees and warm red soil. Some high-toned acidity but this dialed down with time in the glass, when spice, smoke and deep rich black plum fruit emerged. Palate is immediately super-smooth, deep black fruits and black dried Asian spices together with a predominant milky mocha coffee. Really long on the finish...heady, reverberant and with a 'wow' resonance inside the head on the finale. Made from very low-yeilding 100 year old McLaren Vale grapes that stain your hand black/blue, hence 'Squid Ink'. Still a work in progress and has a decade to further unfurl and reveal more dimensionality. 89+ for now.

  • Deep garnet colour. Violets on the nose. Very concentrated blue and black fruits. The wine has great length but the concentrated fruit overwhelms the wine really. I've moved beyond this style of wine, still will enjoy this final bottle.
