  • This has changed since release, and not for the better. There's a prominent harsh, alcoholic note, some pretty intense fruit and acid, and a somewhat bitter finish. My description sounds worse than it is, as an accompaniment to food there are no problems here. It's hard to tell whether it's in an awkward stage or falling apart. Sadly, I'm betting the latter. Good+.

  • Sparkling light gold color with a strong nose of grapefruit, wet stones. Good acidity and a very full and thick sensation in the mouth. Good fruit on the mid and late palate, marked sweetness and with a long finish. Very good, especially at the price (~$14)

  • AP# 9 04. Wow, this is a King Kong of Spätlese. Crazily tropical notes on the nose, verging on over-sweetened fruit cocktail. On the palate this explodes with juicy fruit on a mid-weight frame and then the acid hits you hard. For the first hour after this opened I found a lot of raspiness and astringency on the finish, but with just an hour of air it is already starting to integrate and smooth out quite impressively. The back half of the wine is still a touch more bitter than I like. This wine is fairly packed to the gills with extract and acid, but currently it is not even close to integrated. What can one expect though.

  • Dee Vine 2003 Germans Part I (Dee Vine Wines, San Francisco, CA): $16, $14 on pre-arrival at Dee Vine, 11%, AP 9-04. This doesn't seem the same weight as the other spätlesen, but it's good. A bit blowsy, but just a bit. Balanced, fruity, a hint of plastic. Good+, actually might be Very Good.
